Next Generation Railroaders’ Boot Camp

North Carolina Transportation Museum - Summer 2018 (repeats annually)

The heritage railroad community has historically struggled to attract young adults as volunteers. Money and time are factors, but so is the hurdle of joining an established social group mostly made up of older men.

I created and ran the Next Generation Railroaders’ Boot Camp for young adults aged 16-20 as a safe, easy introduction to the community and a "sampler” of different opportunities, ranging from artifact conservation to trackwork to running a locomotive. The week-long day camp was an immediate success. Of the nine participants, three have become regular volunteers at the museum.
